Warm Up America! Foundation (WUA!) is a non-profit organization that donates knit and crochet blankets and accessories to a variety of people in need. They train volunteers to work together to craft blanket panels, join them, organize them, and ship them to people who need them. The organization that started as one woman’s small vision has grown into more than she ever could have imagined.

Hundreds of thousands of people in need have received donations from WUA! over the years. The foundation receives requests from a variety of social service agencies, including homeless shelters, battered women’s shelters, American Red Cross chapters, veterans homes, senior centers, hospices, and religious organizations serving families and individuals in communities around the country.

From Margaret in Minnesota: Collected all our sweaters and hats this afternoon. Must be about 40 sweaters and even more hats. Lots of smiles. The tags read “Given with love and care for you and your family” in English and Arabic.

The Winona Knitters are sort of our sister knitting group in Minnesota, and where Margaret knits when she isn't out here with us. These baby garments are headed to the Salaam Cultural Museum in Seattle, which ships a couple of huge containers a year to a Syrian refugee camp in Jordan.

Helping Syrian Refugees

Here is the Winona, Minnesota knitters group that Margaret (our snow bird) knits with when she is at home up north.  They got together after Margaret returned from Las Cruces and told friends that Kathy D. and several members from our group were knitting baby clothes for Syrian refugees living in an enormous camp in Jordan.  The Salaam Cultural Museum in Seattle ships donated clothing and humanitarian goods twice a year.  This was the January collection for mailing from Winona to Seattle and on to Jordan.  

Everyone involved agrees than it's a small thing, but it feels good to be doing something positive.

A note from Margaret: Nine of us gather at a coffee shop on Thursdays to knit baby clothes for the Salaam Cultural Museum in Seattle, inspired by Kathy Dolan. And a couple of weeks ago, we mailed about 25 sweaters, hats, and leggings to them for the refugee camp in Jordan.  Here's a photo.

The tags are written in Arabic and English, sending love and hope.

Karen Adds to the Doll Collection

You might remember that Terry and Cathy knit dolls for a community project. Here is Karen's interpretation of the knitting guild knit-a-long project. The completed dolls went to the local domestic violence center. Pattern courtesy of Amy Gaines. Yarn was donated by the knitting guild.

Knit for Syrian Refugee Babies

Sweater and hats made for this project by Kathy D. and Margaret

Members of the St. Paul's knitting group can donate hand knit wool baby sweaters for a project that will help keep Syrian refugee babies warm. Kathy D. will take the garments back with her to Washington state to a museum collection point where they will be packed into layettes (collections of clothing for newborn children) and sent on from there.

The sweaters should be in baby sizes (newborn to three months) in your choice of pattern, and knit/crocheted from wool yarn. There is also a need for baby hats, and for knit/crocheted/quilted blankets.

The sweaters can be pullovers or cardigans. Here are some patterns to get you started.
